“Teaching critical thinking can be difficult, and it is nice to know that Professors Joe Lau and Jonathan Chan at the University of Hong Kong have created this site to help both teachers and students in this endeavor. Working with a grant from the government of Hong Kong’s University Grants Committee, the two have created this website to provide access to over 100 free online tutorials on critical thinking, logic, scientific reasoning, and creativity. The homepage includes a brief introduction to critical thinking and access to the main modules, which are divided into thematic areas such as values and morality, strategic thinking, and basic logic. Visitors can also view the Chinese version of this site, download class exercises, and even take on “the hardest logic puzzle in the world.” [KMG]”

“Understanding how various concepts and processes in physics can be an exasperating experience for students beginning to study the field, so finding sites like this one can be quite a delight. These Java-based applets were developed at Davidson University by Wolfgang Christian, and they are a real delight. First-time visitors may wish to read through the introduction on using these physlets, and then move on to look through the different sections on the site. In total, there are over 100 physlets here, and they include those that illustrate (or animate) such processes as linear momentum, elastic linear collisions, and the movement of sound waves.” [KMG]

Java needed to play demos.

From the Library Journal–this annual list of their favorite mysteries from 2007:

A Treasury of Regrets

Alleyn, Susanne

Set in post-revolutionary Paris, freelance inspector Aristide Ravel investigates the poisoning of the patriarch of the wealthy Duponts. Good attention to historical detail.

Tahoe Silence

Borg, Todd

PI McKenna embarks on a voyage of self-discovery as he tries to find a kidnapped 17 year old who is also mute and autistic. One of a few good novels about autism.

Nefertiti: The Book of the Dead

Drake, Nick

This debut novel introduces a Theban policeman who is ordered to find the missing Nefertiti. If he doesn’t, he’s dead. Lots of historical detail plus well-drawn characters.

A Beautiful Blue Death

Finch, Charles

Another debut novel. This time set in Victorian England. A complex mystery detailing the developing relationship of Charles Lenox and Lady Jane as they attempt to solve the murder of a maid who learned too much.

Fresh Kills: An Artie Cohen Mystery

Nadelson, Reggie

PI Cohen struggles to identify a serial killer targeting little girls in New York City and deal with the needs of a troubled nephew and solve his own personal problems. The best so far of Nadleson’s “Archipelago Trilogy.”
