Office 2007 changeover

From CEITLWiki

The Zane State College ITS Department will be rolling out Office 2007 for the start of fall quarter. Office 2003 will remain on all PC's to provide backward compatibility during this transfer.

Microsoft Office 2007 is a major update to the office suite. Word and other programs in this suite save files in a new format, which is incompatible with Office 2000-2003. Home users that plan to continue using Office 2000-2003 will need to utilize the Save as feature in Office 2007 or install the compatibility pack from Microsoft in order to operate in compatibility mode at home. Compatibility mode provides the ability to open, edit, save, and create files using the new formats in Microsoft Office 2007.

[edit] What you need to know about our PC configuration

  • Office 2007 is the default office application, i.e. double-clicking a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document will open it in Office 2007; however, all PC's will have Office 2003 as well.
  • Office 2007 documents cannot be opened in Office 2003 without a converter.
  • If you will be working on PC's and/or sharing documents with people that do not have Office 2007, you can
    1. save documents in the 2003 format, or
    2. install a free conversion utility on the PC with Office 2003.
  • If you prefer to work in Office 2003, you can open files directly in Office 2003.

[edit] What happened to Word???

While you should be able to create and edit documents in Office 2007 without too much trouble, the interface--especially Word--looks quite different. For a quick overview of the changes in Word, see the Up to speed with Word 2007 demonstration from Microsoft. If you would like a more comprehensive tutorial on using Word, Microsoft offers this 30-40 minute training as well.

[edit] Work-at-home provision

Due to more stringent licensing requirements under our Microsoft Campus Agreement, employees will now need to purchase Microsoft software media.

The following are the Microsoft software applications available for work-at-home and the associated pricing:

Title Price
Windows Vista Business $5.00
Windows XP Pro $5.25
Office Enterprise 2007 $5.00
Office Mac Pro 2004 $7.00
Project Pro 2007 $4.50
Vstudio.NET Pro 2005 $22.20
Office SharePoint Designer 2007 $4.50

Employees can request Microsoft software for work-at-home through the ITS helpdesk. Requested software will be charged back to the employee's department budget; employees should obtain supervisor approval in advance.
