• American National Biography
  • Biographical essays on anyone who died before 1996 and "whose significant actions occurred during his or her residence within what is now the United States or whose life or career directly influenced the course of American history.
• Biography Reference Bank
  • Full text biography database containing in-depth, original profiles from Wilson Biographies Plus Illustrated, Biography Index, and full-text articles, page images, and abstracts from the complete range of Wilson databases (including biographical profiles, feature articles, interviews, essays, book reviews, performance reviews, speeches, or obituaries). It covers over 500,000 people and includes over 36,000 images.
• Literary Reference Center
  • A comprehensive full-text database that provides users with information from major respected reference works, books, literary journals on thousands of authors and their works across literary disciplines and timeframes.

• CIA World Factbook
  • Provides concise informative profiles for over 260 geographic entities (mostly countries).
  • Each profile has the following sections: Introduction, Geography, People, Government, Economy, Communications, Transportation, Military, and Transnational Issues.
• Country Profiles (LexisNexis)
  • News and research reports on various countries of the world, from more than a dozen individual sources. Also includes some of the most comprehensive sources of political, economic and socio-demographic information.
• Country Studies/Area Handbook
  • This site covers more than 100 countries with full-text information from the most recent volumes of the Country Studies/Area Studies series from the Library of Congress.
  • Descriptions include information such as social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of each country.
  • Note that these studies were published between 1988 and 1998 and may contain some out-of-date information.
• CountryWatch
  • Provides "country specific geopolitical intelligence on each of the 192 countries of the world. " Includes basic information on each country, constantly updated news stories, links to official websites, etc. Topics include government, economy, investment climate, and social and environmental issues.

• American Heritage Dictionary
  • A general dictionary with definitions for over 90,000 words; includes 70,000 * audio word pronunciations.
• Oxford Dictionary of Abbreviations
  • Covers more than 20,000 "business, scientific, and technical abbreviations, as well as those in everyday use. In addition to abbreviations used in English-speaking countries, the dictionary includes some non-English terms."
• Oxford English Dictionary
  • An historical dictionary of the English language; provides definitions for words at specific times in English history.
• Oxford Dictionary of Idioms
  • Interprets the meanings and origins of such well-known idioms as 'set the world alight', 'cost an arm and a leg', 'once in a blue moon', and 'the tip of the iceberg'.
• Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs
  • Contains 2400 of the best-known English language proverbs.

  • Contains rhymes for 45,000 words.
• Quotations (Oxford Reference On-line)
  • Full text access to reference workks on quotations.

  • Contains 35,000 synonyms and over 250,000 cross-references.

  • Online version of the Encyclopedia Britannica; includes Britannica's Internet Guide and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.
• Columbia Encyclopedia
  • Standard one volume encyclopedia.
• Enciclopedia Universal en Espanol
  • Spanish language version of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
• Worldmark Encyclopedia of the States
  • Provides current geographical, social, and political data, historical narrative, and statistical information on the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Caribbean and Pacific dependencies of the US. Also included: data on 50 rubrics, maps, tables, flags and official state seals.
• Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations
  • Provides information on 200 countries and dependencies from around the world. Topics include: banking and securities, climate, government data, demographic statistics, and biographical essays on national leaders.

  • Includes information about careers such as work activities and environment, earnings, number of jobs and their location, and types of education, training, and personal qualifications needed to have the best prospects.
• World Almanac
  • Includes basic facts on a broad range of topics.
  • Covers American life, people in the news, arts and entertainment, science and technology, computers, sports, economics, taxes, the environment, profiles of U.S. states and territories, historical anniversaries, U.S. cities and states, national defense, vital statistics, nations of the world, and much more.

• County and City Data Book
  • Latest official demographic statistics for all United States counties, cities with 25,000 or more inhabitants, and places of 2,500 or more inhabitants.

  • This site provides quick access to demographic information on the United States. Does not include census data for genealogical research.
