[edit] What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is an online course management system (CMS). It allows anyone with basic computer skills to create and participate in online courses.

[edit] I don't teach classes at a distance, why would I want to use Blackboard?

Blackboard contains many features that instructors find useful for face-to-face classes, too. For example, with Blackboard you can:

  • post your syllabus and class policies
  • upload PowerPoint presentations for students to review
  • upload copies of other class handouts
  • post links to websites of interest
  • engage students in discussions outside of class
  • use the testing feature to give pre-quizzes
  • use the gradebook feature to allow students to easily track their progress
  • have students submit assignments electronically
  • provide students with a space to do group work like doing research papers and other school activities
  • host a synchronous chat for exam review or virtual office hours

[edit] How do I get a class on Blackboard?

You can request a Blackboard course online at http://ceitl.zanestate.edu/bbrequest.php. There is also a link on the employees page of the Zane State website; just click Employees in the menu on the left.

[edit] Do you offer workshops on using Blackboard?

Of course! Check out the calendar. If there are no Blackboard workshops scheduled, contact ToddSlater for help. You should also consider joining the Teach Discussion List, a Zane State faculty support email list.
