Open source video
I don’t doubt that people are creating media using open source tools, but what’s missing is documentation such as that provided by Joe Friedrichsen. He’s created at least a couple of videos, one of which is The Green Tea of Shizuoka. What’s amazing is his post-production process documentation, in which he explains in great detail how he put his stuff together: base system, audio, graphics, footage, subtitles, dvd menus, and the final dvd.
I agree that video editing in linux still has a long way to go for the average user, so it’s great to see people publishing their work.
Funny thing is, I wasted a couple of hours this afternoon hunting for an easy (and free) way to convert a .wmv file to .avi or .mov on Windows or Mac. (I can’t use one of the online converters because this file is almost an hour long.) Wouldn’t you know I got home and google pointed me to a simple command for doing it using mencoder. So for some things, video on linux is easier.
