Linux multimedia group

17 August 2006

If you ever create or work with multimedia in linux, you might know how frustrating it can be when you run into a problem. The typical solution involves google and software-specific support lists. I recently encountered a problem that doesn’t have an easily-identifiable place to turn to for help, so I created the Linux Multimedia group on google. I’m only slightly surprised that I couldn’t find a generic linux multimedia group, keeping in mind the unix philosophy of “do one thing.”

The group description:

A non-distribution-specific group for discussing multimedia software and hardware on Linux. Topics might include: authoring, playing, converting, ripping, streaming, serving, burning, etc.

My welcome message:

I created this group because I was trying to figure out if I could
create a QuickTime poster movie in linux. I got frustrated googling and
couldn’t find any generic linux multimedia group/community. My
particular question didn’t seem appropriate for my distribution’s user
support list, so here’s to hoping there are other linux users that find
themselves in the same boat. The goal is to create a one-stop shopping
space for linux multimedia questions.

Please join and tell your friends!
