Why do my screen capture movies look like crap in PowerPoint?

15 May 2006

Normally I would just use a web page, but I need an automatic/looping presentation that PowerPoint is so good at. I captured some screen movies with Camtasia and thought I’d convert them to flash with Camstudio since my version of Camtasia predates their convert to swf option. Everything goes well, but when I insert the flash into PowerPoint it looks really awful. I get the width and height of the animation and try to manually plug it in the PowerPoint shockwave flash object, but for some reason that makes the animation about twice as big as the screen. Maybe I should have just left it as an avi.

Right then, back to avi. It still looks awful. Let’s poke around a bit and see if there’s anything I can do. Right-click the movie > format picture > size > and tick “best scale for slideshow.” In the resolution drop-down box, pick the resolution you are (or will be) running when you present–for me, 1024 x 768. Hit preview and run the show again. Finally, that works.

I still don’t know how to get PowerPoint to show my flash animation at the correct size. How incredibly annoying!
