Social bookmarking: one account, multiple profiles
Tony has been writing a lot about social bookmarking, sharing, and interoperability among systems (here, here, here, and here). I’ve been following his posts, which also prompted me to return to an idea I had about using multiple profiles within a social bookmarking system. The idea is to make it easier for the user to tag sites automatically when in a certain “mode.” For example, let’s say I’m a student in a class called EDTE 716 searching the web for information on change in curriculum and instruction. I might want to create a profile for this task that automatically tags bookmarks with EDTE 716, c&i, etc.
Here’s how I’m going to try to make Scuttle allow multiple profiles.
By clicking a profiles link, you’ll go to a page like this where you can add, edit, and delete profiles.
Profiles
| todd | Edit | Delete | Default |
| StudentClass1 | Edit | Delete | |
| StudentClass2 | Edit | Delete | |
| TeacherClass1 | Edit | Delete | |
| TeacherClass2 | Edit | Delete | |
| Add new profile |
When you add or edit a profile, you’ll see something like this:
Create New Profile
| Profile name | |
| Default privacy | |
| Default tags | (comma separated) |
| Make default profile |
When you’re adding a bookmark, you’ll be able to select a profile for your current session:
Profile:
Do you suppose students and instructors would find multiple profiles useful?

Hi Todd -
This approach looks interesting? I was wondering whether I could mash profiles in systems that allow groups by creating lots of groups that I’m the only member of.
I’ve not used a Scuttle system yet, so don’t have a feel for how they can be abused at a user - rather than sys admin/coder level, but I’d certainly be interested in seeing how you progress this idea.

That’s awesome, it’s like having channels
I have multiple del.icio.us accounts, and clicking a
bookmarklet always gets me into trouble (I’m always loggin in)
Only if I could have one account, but choose a channel
…great idea.
I kind of use Google Notebook this way…when I add a note,
I can choose which notebook and which section heading
before I submit.
