My tagging evolution
When I first started using Scuttle to manage my bookmarks, I tried to come up with the perfect, concise tag for every site I bookmarked. I planned to keep my blogroll in Scuttle, providing a link to a specific tag from my blog, thereby saving space on my front page. The problem was that there was no good tag for every thing I wanted. I started with tags like blogroll_edtech, blogroll_technews, but it quickly became tiresome and it seemed artificial. In fact, it defeated one of the purposes of tagging, which is to allow stuff to belong to more than one classification.
Finally, I decided to let the software take care of things for me. Now I just tag blogs with “blogroll” and any additional tags I might want. Now, when you visit my blogroll tag page in Scuttle, you see the Related Tags section, which includes things like edtech, gtd, social software. All you have to do is click on the plus sign next to the tag of interest and you get bookmarks with that tag AND blogroll. It’s much easier to let the software do the heavy lifting.
