Big IDEA

It’s the teaching, not the technology.

I’m down with bookmarks and tags

I've long been a fan of bookmark4u, but the lead developer is putting the project on the back burner as he's accomplished what he set out to do. There are a couple of issues I have with it, namely that there is no support for easy sharing (such as ...

Google customized news

I visited Google news today and was impressed with the new customization options. Click "Customize this page" and you can add a standard news topic or a custom topic (search by keywords). Then, arrange them however you like on the page. Still no RSS, though :(.

RE: RSS, Blogs, and MERLOT in Blackboard

Vidya sums up my feelings about Blackboard's licensing scheme in which basic license subscribers get a greatly diminished product while the cost-prohibitive high-level licenses get a few extra goodies. What frustrates me is the fact that clearly Blackboard recognizes the fact that educational institutions, K-12 as well as higher-ed are ...

I have a really nice site

In fact, some fellow from a casino spent all afternoon reading my site and was kind enough to leave a comment stating so. I don't know if it's the same fellow who left the four other comments but it might be because they all worked at casinos, too. One nice ...

How to mount Novell shares in Ubuntu

Since this is new territory for me, and I know of at least one other person on campus who has Ubuntu on a laptop, here are instructions for mounting a Novell drive: sudo mkdir /mnt/novell (or /mnt/whatever) sudo chown username:username /mnt/novell (replace username with your real username on the linux box) sudo vi ...

Mounting Novell shares in Linux

Yes, you can using ncpmount. It's pretty simple, really: ncpmount -S servername mountpoint -U username -P password OK, the proof is in the screenshot (165K).

Oops–feed fixed

I was cleaning up my bloglines subs today and noticed that my feed was old. When I upgraded to WordPress 1.5 I also moved it from /wordpress to /. If you were subscribed at the /wordpress/wp-rss2.php addy you probably weren't getting an updated feed. I put a symlink in that ...

My trip to ITC237

I visited the ITC237 class a week ago to introduce them to blojsom and blogging in general. We had some issues with the default and un-changeable settings in Internet Explorer, such that a page refresh didn't always update the page properly. The students basically knew what blogs were, but none ...

Tablet PC ordeal

If you think that your old tablet pc could stand a fresh install of Windows XP Tablet PC edition, let me tell you what happened to me. I got a copy of the CD's from MIS and did the install. I got a key from our Campus Agreement guy and ...

RE: practical guide to fair use

I can't get over how cool RSS Bandit is--I can right-click a post and call up w.bloggar to write a response on my blog, complete with article text, blockquotes, and everything. Here's a nice reference on Fair Use: John Palfrey : : A Practical Guide to the Fair Use Doctrine, ...

The hidden beauty of Google Desktop

I discovered that Google Desktop search not only indexes the files on your local computer but also files on any mounted network drive. This is tremendous news for us here at Zane State because we have a drive like no other, the dreaded "common" drive. This is the drive ...

Kudos, pLog team!

I just upgraded our install of pLog to the 1.0 release and the changes are impressive! The admin interface, a dashboard, is much improved. Since my major complaint before was the admin interface, there's really not anything left to complain about! (OK, how about in the default template ...

Allende and Free Software

I was listening to the radio Monday and caught a new segment on NPR, This I Believe, a resurrected Edward R. Murrow program. I was particularly impressed with Murrow's introduction to the show back in 1951: We hardly need to be reminded that we are living in an age of ...

Coming out about Podcasting

Darren has given me the courage to come out and admit that I don't care for podcasting. In fact, I'm not even sure I "get it." First some background: a) I've never produced a podcast, but I could easily create audio content, b) I've only briefly experimented with ...

Finally, blogs.zanestate.edu works!

It seems our ISP hadn't opened the proper ports and traffic couldn't get in or out, but all that is resolved now and http://blogs.zanestate.edu is live!

AQIP Center for Excellence blog

The Center for Excellence team has its own blog now, located at http://ceitl.zanestate.edu/blog/plog/index.php?blogId=15.

Yes, Blojsom podcasts!

I was playing around with Blojsom this morning and thought I'd give the old podcasting a whirl. I uploaded an mp3 through the admin interface, then went to post an entry and in the rss enclosure section selected the mp3 from a drop-down box with a list of files in ...
