Transformative assessment

20 October 2004

OK, a lot of “duh’s” in this session, like using results of assessment to make improvements. This session was a little too birds-eye for me, I would have preferred some more nitty-gritty.

Chuckles cartoon showing administrator sitting behind a desk, talking to a mom and dad: I have been authorized by the Feds to leave your child behind. Brown also used an excellent slide, one of those optical illusion images that is static but when you try to focus different parts seem to be moving. Used in the context of the impact of CMS’s on learning–it appears to be moving!

It was nice to hear Brown linking Bush with McGraw-Hill and the emphasis on standardized testing and curricula. Who stands to gain from Bush’s policy? I haven’t heard this discussed since the early days of his presidency (but I haven’t really looked, either) . This was out there when he was governor of Texas.

To check out later: Kuh and Pascarella in Change magazine. The magazines that do the “Best Schools” ratings are rating the effectiveness of student selection rather than teaching and learning experiences on campus. (Yay, nice point.) Also, Carmean’s Assessment Bootcamp.
