Miscellaneous thoughts on Educause 2004

The best place to blog and recharge a battery, away from the hustle and bustle and whoring in Vendor Hell: the ground floor, far end by the Mac email stations. No table and chairs, just quiet.

Number of sink “interfaces” encountered in restrooms at the Convention Center: 4

  • auto detect
  • single push button, mounted on counter, with timer
  • single push button, mounted on front of spigot, with timer
  • single push button, mounted on top of spigot, with timer

The best part of the boxed lunches:

Worst vendor for pulling people in: Adobe. (I hate vendors that try to pull you in, but yesterday I inquired about DRM, but the one Adobe guy who knew about it was in a meeting, and since I was on my way to a session I said I’d stop back. I stopped back, and nobody seems particularly interested in me, even with my confused, I-have-a-question look.)

My favorite exchange:
Blackboard rep: Are you a Bb client?
Me: (disappointed) Yeah …
Blackboard rep: What version?
Me: 5.5
Blackboard rep: We still have a lot of clients on 5.5. You know, the problems with moving to 6.
Me: Yeah …

I think he sensed I don’t care for Bb. Good read.

Pleasant surprises: free software (Open Source if you must) continues to grow.
