Free Software to the Rescue (Again)

28 May 2004

Unfortunately I’ve been working on a laptop for the last several months and it has started taking it’s toll on my body (RSI). So, I wanted to set something up that would let me work on any computer here in the lab, move files to my personal home directory on the network, then synchronize my home folder with a folder on my laptop for when I need to travel. I tried using Windows built-in folder synching, but you need to be on a Windows network to do that (it seems that you can’t use Windows folder sharing with a folder on a Novell network drive).

I searched for some software and discovered a couple of options from Heatsoft, but I ended up going with Unison. I created a folder on my desktop called “briefcase” and launched Unison. It prompted me for my local directory and I browsed for my briefcase folder; then it prompted me for another local or remote folder, and I browsed for my personal network folder. Unison showed me what was different about the folders and had arrows showing me which way files needed to go. I just hit “go” and everything synched up.

Unison is free software released under the GPL. Oh yeah, it will also synch across platforms, so if you need to synch to a *nix box, give it a try. [Screenshot]
